Thesis (M.A.)--Tufts University, 2023.
Open space provides a plethora of benefits to its users. Consideration of feelings of safety and fear in open space in policy and planning is essential to ensure that urban parks are best serving constituents. Perception of open space and urban parks is important because how a place is perceived will influence how people interact with it. If a place is perceived as unsafe, people are likely to avoid going there or limit their time there, but if a place is perceived as safe and welcoming, then people will be more likely to utilize that space. Often, policy and planning decisions are made based on crime rates rather than perceptions of safety.Environmental factors influence how people perceive a place and how safe they feel. Safety audits and crime prevention through environmental design incorporate these factors into their questionnaires and design principles. This thesis operationalizes factors related to feelings of safety identified in perceived safety literature into a GIS analysis to identify areas of concern in a city park. The analysis uses factors other than crime rates and incident that may better address safety concerns to improve policy and planning decisions.
