Thesis (Psy.D.)--Azusa Pacific University, 2022.
Over the past 10 to 15 years, emerging adults have redefined dating in America. Dating now looks significantly different compared to previous generations. New dating trends have been observed, such as use of technology in dating, hookup culture, cohabitating before marriage, rekindling with ex-partners, and changing marital views. This has led many to conclude that emerging adults are not as inclined toward romantic commitment as previous generations. A review of the literature, however, suggests these beliefs are not entirely accurate. Emerging adults strongly desire to be romantically committed to a partner but are hindered by many current dating practices. Moreover, emerging adults are more likely than previous generations to delay romantic commitment and spend more time in the "grounding stages" of relationships.
