Thesis (M.A.)--Webster University, 2023.
The therapeutic relationship can sometimes intersect with a spiritual alliance. This thesis explores in-depth how Buddhist-informed counselors in the UK conduct their practice and how their own personal spiritual beliefs play a role in their therapeutic approach with clients. Three research questions were asked, 1) What is the pathway that Buddhist-informed counselors have taken to reach a point of implementing their beliefs into their counseling practice? 2) How do Buddhist-informed counselors mesh their Buddhist beliefs with Western theories of counseling? 3) How do Buddhist-informed counselors apply their approach in a practical setting with clients? Through this, six themes emerged including a significant past event which led to finding Buddhism, the integration of Buddhist psychotherapy through specific training, practicing mindful awareness, integrating Buddhist notions, explicit versus implicit Buddhist counseling, and awareness and authenticity of the therapeutic alliance. Findings show that regardless of the pathway taken to reach a point of implementing Buddhist beliefs into counseling practice, it is apparent that all participants were guided and informed by their spirituality when in the capacity of counseling. Through this study, there are recommended best practice guidelines for counselors who wish to incorporate spirituality into their practice.
