Thesis (Ph.D.)--Amridge University, 2024.
Theological reasoning pertaining to the doctrine of God has undergone radical shifts from the twentieth century to the present day. This has led to changes in how biblical scholars, theologians, and philosophers have participated in apologetic engagement with atheism. This study seeks to explore the relationship between underlying metaphysical beliefs about God and arguments that are employed for his existence. The primary point of emphasis here is on metaphysical arguments for God's existence, as well as engagement with the problem of evil. A paradigm is established for understanding varying models of God and how contemporary models differ from what is generally termed "classical theism." I provide an overview of arguments for God's existence that are implemented by several prominent Christian biblical scholars, theologians, and philosophers. The dissertation ends with an analysis of the relationship between those arguments for God's existence and the models of God that they are associated with. While every scholar's views are different, general patterns of thought can easily be recognized. Among other observations, it is ultimately demonstrated that a denial of divine simplicity leads many modern scholars to argue for God's existence in terms of probability, while classical theists argue for the logical necessity of God's existence.
