Jonathan Edwards has been called the "grandfather of modern Protestant missions." His writings were critical in providing the theological motivation for the creation of the first foreign missions organizations in Britain and America, and the inspiration for many of their missionaries. This dissertation adds a chapter to the story of Edwards's missions legacy by showing ways in which Jonathan Edwards's theology and legacy of revival shaped the expectations, strategy, and practices of the first American missionaries to Ottoman Turkey, and the revival they believe they saw there. Edwards's theology of revival was rooted in English Puritanism and hammered out on the anvil of colonial America's eighteenth-century awakenings. It became the mainspring of the New England phase of the Second Great Awakening in the 1790s and early decades of the 1800s, led by Edwards's New Divinity followers, and out of which flowed numerous voluntary societies, including America's first foreign missions organization, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (1810). The Board was heavily influenced by Edwards's revival legacy and led by New Divinity men. It opened its Middle Eastern field with the policy of seeking to revive and reform the region's Eastern churches. William Goodell opened the Armenian mission in Constantinople in 1831 with this policy in mind. H. G. O. Dwight and Cyrus Hamlin followed soon afterward. All three were steeped in an Edwardsian theology of revival and instrumental in the revival that began among the Armenians in Constantinople. When a growing number of evangelical converts were excommunicated from the Armenian Orthodox Church in 1846, the Evangelical Armenian Church was formed with the help of the missionaries. The new church grew rapidly and continued to see revival, increasingly through Armenian pastors. In 1861, Dwight left the field, believing his work was done, and that the movement of revival and reform he and the other missionaries helped to start would continue under Armenian leadership.
