Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2024.
This dissertation's research question was: "What are the experiences of servant leaders as they identify and develop strengths within a team?" The purpose was to fill gaps in servant leadership research. Nine servant leaders participated in semi-structured interviews. Through inductive analysis, five themes emerged from the data: (a) connect through honesty and transparency; (b) find innovative ways to leverage formal and informal resources; (c) increase team member responsibility and authority; (d) inspire team members to invest time and energy; and (e) positive reception and duplication of serving behaviors. The findings suggest connection, innovation, and inspiration emerged as keys to success; building trust and developing solid relationships are equally important. Servant leaders identified and developed strengths by using communication to solidify their connection to their followers, offering innovative training and development methods, and inspiring others through empowerment. However, the deliberate means of building a solid connection was the adhesive that brought the aspects and techniques of service and identifying and developing strengths together. This study explored these behaviors from the leader's perspective; future research could investigate the team members' experiences or explore a mixed methodology to enhance the understanding of servant and strengths-based leadership practices.
