Thesis (D.A.)--New York University, 1992.
The purpose of this study is to deepen the understanding of the music therapy experience. The study seeks to understand meaningful moments, the factors that facilitate these moments, and the contribution of these moments to both clients' and therapists' lives. A qualitative approach is utilized as the method of both data gathering and analysis. Eight participants were interviewed in intensive, open-ended interviews: Four music therapists who work from a humanistic perspective, and four clients who have been in music therapy for at least four months. Each interview was transcribed, organized and analyzed in categories in accordance with the grounded theory method of qualitative research. This analysis yielded fifteen meaningful moments in the experience of music therapy: Awareness and insight; acceptance; freedom; wholeness and integration; completion and accomplishment; beauty and inspiration; spirituality; intimacy with self; ecstasy and joy; anger, fear, and pain; surprise; transformation; physical closeness between therapist and client; musical intimacy between therapist and client; and close contact between client and a significant person in his life. Among the factors that allowed these moments to come to birth were music, music therapist's use of knowledge, experience and intuition, and client's readiness, courage and trust. The contribution of these moments to the clients' lives included improved self-esteem, improved physical and emotional health and interpersonal relationships. They also contributed to the therapists' knowledge and self growth. The results of this study are discussed in terms of their importance to clinical work and the implications to the training of music therapists.
