Thesis (M.A.)--Webster University, 2024.
Climate change, disasters, and environmental factors are increasingly driving human mobility. About 70 per cent of displaced people look to cities for safety and opportunity. However, little is known about such mobility dynamics in African cities particularly the role of urban actors in better responding to these mobility challenges. This research aims to fill this gap. The primary research question is "why is integrating local knowledge crucial for addressing human mobility in the context of climate-induced disasters?" The basic hypothesis posits that local knowledge, including the existence of specific administrative structures such as a city mayor, positively enhances the effectiveness of disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation strategies regarding human mobility challenges. The study employs a qualitative method to provide a comprehensive understanding of these complex interactions. The study draws on a comparative analysis focusing on two cities: Baidoa, Somalia and Damaturu, Nigeria. The findings have the potential to inform urban policies, development practices, and local governance strategies to create more resilient and adaptive cities, to address the needs of their populations amidst a changing climate and increasing disaster risks.
