Romantic interactions are often difficult to navigate, and individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have innate difficulty with social interactions. Despite the compounded difficulty, little research has explored the romantic experiences of individuals with ASD. The study aimed to investigate the perception and understanding of the romantic and dating experiences among young adults with ASD, and the impact of recent social changes and events on dating behaviors among young adult males with ASD. Five respondents aged 19 to 34 years old participated in the study which utilized a mixed-methods design. Quantitative data was collected via survey measures, including the Dating Anxiety Scale (DAS) and the Networks of Relationships Inventory (NRI). Qualitative data was collected using a semi-structured interview protocol and analyzed using a Straussian Grounded theory approach. The romantic experiences of young men with ASD are varied and can range from marriage to disinterest. The Grounded theory approach identified nine framing concepts from the interview process- Communication, Desired characteristics of partner, Date activities, Challenges and barriers, Date Initiation, Own Interest topics, Comfort/experience, Support/family, and Behavioral Expectations. Three larger categories related to the romantic experiences of young adults with ASD were revealed: Ideal Dating Experience, Barriers to Dating, and Supportive Systems. Theoretical applications and clinical implications are discussed as well as study limitations. Further research is warranted to better understand the romantic experiences of individuals with ASD.
