Historically, religious epistemology has been done primarily under internalist and evidentialist frameworks. This is due in large part to the fact that insights from general epistemology serve as a precedent for work in religious epistemology. More recently, general epistemology has moved away from internalism and evidentialism in favor of externalist and reliabilist frameworks. Thinkers like William Alston and Alvin Plantinga used the findings that arose from this shift in the epistemology of perception and applied them to religious epistemology in such a way that avoided radical skepticism about the justification of religious belief. More recently, general epistemology has shifted towards emphasizing the social dimensions of knowledge acquisition and justification. Despite this change, however, religious epistemology seems to have remained focused on the justification of religious belief under individualistic terms. The present work provides a critical and positive contribution to the prospect of developing a social religious epistemology-an epistemology that acknowledges our social epistemic dependence on others in the religious realm. Focused on in particular is John Greco's theory of social religious knowledge, as well as Greco's solution to the Garbage Problem that arises via the transmitting function of testimony. It is argued that, for its numerous and insightful contributions, Greco's proposed solution to the Garbage Problem- both in general and as it applies to religious belief-contains at least two major theoretical flaws, out of which practical and moral flaws arise. In the end, three desiderata of an adequate theory of social religious knowledge are advocated: first, the possession of metaphilosophical qualities; second, anti-reductionism about religious testimony; and third, the adoption of what I refer to as a harm principle for religious testimony to combat the Garbage Problem for Religious Belief in such a way that withstands the problems that arise out of Greco's proposed solution.
