Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2024.
The purpose of this generic qualitative inquiry study was to explore the role of personal values in the leadership behavior of servant leaders in U.S. corporations. The leaders that participated in the study self-identified as servant leaders. The data was gathered using semi-structured, open-ended interview questions. The data gathered related to personal values and servant leadership behavior. There were ten study participants. Study participants were limited to servant leaders in a for-profit U.S. corporation with at least 5 years in management with direct reports. Purposive sampling was used to receive participants that had prior knowledge of servant leadership and participants that were interested in participating in the study. Schwartz's theory of basic human values was used for the interpretation of personal values. Personal values play a significant role in the leadership behavior of servant leaders. The results of the study provided addressed a gap in research as it relates to the impact of personal values on the behavior of servant leaders. Also, the study's intent was to expand on the current research by identifying personal values and exploring the role personal values play in the behavior of servant leaders. The results identified the personal values of the self-identified servant leaders and validated the significance of personal values in the leadership behavior of servant leaders.
