The literature on the training of a clinician is vast. However, the training of mind has been neglected as a vital part of the process in the training of psychoanalysts and psychotherapists. Following a careful examination of the literature, it has been concluded that the techniques found in the practice of Zen meditation are essential in the training of mind. The practice of Zen meditation rooted in Zen Buddhism has much to offer to Western Psychology. The literature suggests that the practice of Zen meditation can aid in developing the therapists' attentional, perceptual, and cognitive functions. Moreover, Zen meditation has been found to develop a higher degree of empathy in psychotherapists. The literature on countertransference and Zen is also limited. However, it has been reported that the practice of Zen meditation may aid in issues related to countertransference. The Dissertation delineates: (a) The history of Zen Buddhism, where Zen meditation practices are rooted; (b) Zen Buddhism and Psychoanalysis; (c) Zen Buddhism and other Western psychotherapies; and (d) Improving psychotherapeutic skills through Zen meditation. The "Facing East" program has been constructed employing the practices and principles believed to be necessary in the training of mind, ultimately resulting in the improvement of psychotherapeutic skills through Zen meditation. It is hypothesized that the training of mind through Zen meditation will improve psychotherapeutic skills. The dimensions examined are attentional/listening skills, empathy skills, and issues of countertransference.
