The role of the school counselor has expanded from the traditional responsibilities. According to the American School Counselor Association, the roles and responsibilities assigned to high school counselors may have caused conflict and anxiety, perhaps affecting their work-life balance. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if or to what extent state anxiety and work-life balance was to compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue among high school counselors in Southern California. In this study, 115 high school counselor participants completed State Anxiety, Work Life Balance, Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction assessments. The SurveyMonkey platform was utilized to collect the data from the participants, and the SPSS was utilized to analyze the relationship between the variables by preforming a Pearson's correlation analysis. The results showed that there was a (a) significant positive moderate correlation between state anxiety and compassion fatigue r(115) = 0.624, p < .001; (b) significant negative low correlation between state anxiety and compassion satisfaction r(115) = -0.351, p < .001; (c) significant positive low correlation between work-life balance and compassion fatigue r(115) = 0.339, p < .001; and (d) nonsignificant correlation between work-life balance and compassion satisfaction r(115) = -0.044, p = .641. The results of this study were in line with the direction that was predicted therefore contributing to the expansion of the body of knowledge and adding value to the community of school counselors. Future research is warranted to examine other factors that contribute to the mental health of school counselors.
