Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2023.
The purpose of this quantitative research study was to investigate the influence of one's gender, age, and environmentally contextualized operating mode on their personality traits. The current body of knowledge reflects a profusion of scholarly literature that has progressively and convergently shaped the present understanding of personality traits as stable. However, recent advancements in cognitive science have exposed a considerable gap in this knowledge by empirically challenging the status quo thinking. To reconcile said gap, this study has sought to determine what should not necessarily be considered a lack of stability in one's statis configuration of personality traits across the span of an extended developmental period, but rather the presence of fluidity in those traits within the span of the adjacent moments one experiences in everyday life. This study leveraged a quantitative, longitudinal, quasi-experimental survey design to collect personality trait self-assessment data on individuals operating across their home and work environments. The sample of 175 participants included adult men and women between the ages of 20 and 59 who live and work in the United States as full-time professional employees. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) test was run to detect any significant mean differences in one or more of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) personality traits of openness to experience (O), conscientiousness (C), extraversion (E), agreeableness (A), and neuroticism (N), as influenced by the discrete and combined factors of gender, age, and operating mode. The testing results indicated that several of these three univariate factors and multivariate combinations significantly influenced one or more of the five trait measures, thus allowing the researcher to conclude that the environmental context shaping one's real-time and motivationally influenced operating mode does have a material impact on an individual's perception, configuration, and manifestation of their unique personality traits.
