Edible flowers (EF) have found increasing applications in the Food Industry. EF such as daylily (Hemerocallis, spp.) flowers could be regarded as potential nutraceutical food source other than their prior use as food garnishment. The flower has been shown to have beneficial properties such as antioxidant, neuroprotective effects, anti-obesity, anti-microbial, and protection against chronic diseases. This study aimed to determine the phytochemical content, antioxidant capacity, bioefficacy (cytotoxicity/ viability, anti-proliferative) and oxidative stress of daylily flowers using Hep G2 and HepaRG cell lines. Experiment one analyzed, polyphenols and antioxidant content in two varieties of daylily flowers Barbara Mitchell (BM) and Elegant Explosion (EE). The polyphenolic contents via HPLC-DAD and nutritional profile of the two cultivars were also determined. The bioefficacy and potential toxicity, antiproliferation properties, apoptosis and enzymatic activity were examined applying EE extracts on the cell lines. The results indicated EE showed significantly (p≤0.05) higher polyphenolic, antioxidant activity, and identified compounds, respectively. Treatment of HepG2 cells with EE extracts induced cytotoxicity and reduced cell viability. Morphological studies indicated EE induced apoptosis in Hep2G and HepaRG cells.Furthermore, EE extracts caused significant (P<0.05) increases in GSH levels and SOD activities; however, GST activities were significantly (P<0.05) reduced when results were compared to the control untreated cells. With limited information on the bioactivity of the daylily flower, results suggest that daylily is a promising source of polyphenolic compounds. In conclusion results, from this study indicated EE extracts were weakly cytotoxic and thus could be considered for developing a natural compound-based nutraceutical product.
