Fan identity and fandom are significant aspects of entertainment culture, yet very little is known about the manner in which they can impact individuals' well-being. It is well known that music can have a powerful impact on human emotions and well-being, but limited research has been conducted on the psychology of music fans including their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, nor has past research distinguished music fandom from music listening. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine any relationships between the variables of well-being that are associated with the psychology of music fan identity as identified in the Fan Identity Scale - enthusiasm, enjoyment, appreciation, self-definition, and fan experiences. This study utilized a regression analysis and collected data from passionate music and television fans of a particular singer or band or a television show. Results show that identity, enthusiasm, and enjoyment were negatively correlated to music fan well-being when controlling for gender, race and age. However, appreciation, self-definition, and fan experience were seen to positively affect music fan well-being. Genre was found to not be a statistically significant predictor in the model relating music fan identity and well-being. This study was significant because enthusiasm, enjoyment, appreciation, and self-definition all aid in better understanding how music fans build positive aspects in their life through music.
