Thesis (M.F.A.)--Pratt Institute, 2021.
This thesis project is a dual spatial concept that uses physical and virtual sites in communal spaces. A performative healing system with a theatrical therapeutic experience constructing the prototype explores the combination of illusion and reality. With improvisation as the primary form of activities, a 'stage' language is created as the narrative and metaphor, while "exhibitionism" and "frame" are spatial strategies. Mindfulness and lovingkindness, which are essential to building a healthy relationship with others, are inspired. The goal of "La La Land of Reality" is to alleviate social anxiety prevalent among contemporary teenagers by evoking mindfulness and lovingkindness. It is a performative healing space offering teens a theatrical therapeutic experience which encourages them to move from illusion to reality through individual or group activities. The Internet threatens, disrupts, and reconfigures information, communication, and authentic social interaction. Online social contact leads to a loss of connection with real-life, contributing to an artificial lifestyle and triggering social anxiety. Teenagers are the most vulnerable to social conformism and masking authenticity through social media. Therefore, they need specific training and venues to recognize and overcome their social anxiety and return to real social interaction. To develop the ability to build healthy social relationships with others, the project will emphasize user experience and interactive activities. The physical spaces and activities will be designed to continue the cyber social patterns they are used to, creating a platform for comfortable communication. Teenagers with social anxiety can passively feel the companionship through indirect contact with the virtual site constructed in the physical site. At the same time, the stage constructed in the real site extended by the ever-changing virtual site will become a place for them to interact with their peers actively. Improvisation, the main form of the activities, is an integrated term that combines meditation, therapy, and theater and a bridge that connects young individuals. The performances here become a form of self-exposure-a process of facing and accepting the true self. Two spatial strategies are utilized to create a therapeutic space to encourage teenagers with social anxiety to understand and show themselves through performance, to break the psychological shackles step by step, and build healthy relationships with others.'Exhibitionism' is the essential spatial strategy, an active moving experience through physical movement to different spaces, which focuses on subtle changes in wall transparency and light. Unlike 'exhibitionism,' another spatial strategy, 'Framing' creates a passive experience that affects the inner world of the teenagers within a fixed scene. Meanwhile, it is a journey from parts to the whole, from fragments to the overall story.BAM Theater (Brooklyn Academy of Music - Harvey Lichtenstein Theater), located in the Brooklyn Arts District of New York, is the site to test the thesis concept. Serving as a playhouse, then a cinema, the Majestic owns an interior aesthetic that lives comfortably with the distressed appearance of its historic legacy, which echoes the dual framework. Surrounded by many schools, this is an accessible place for the program's target users. At the same time, this historic theater, facing economic decline, seeks new ways to revive. It already hosts several workshops and classes and needs to be served by some more attractive modern rooms. What is more, the multi-arts hub is eager to add some cutting-edge programs by adaptive utilization and design of its idle space. These new spatial functions and projects will also generate deeper integration and communication with the arts district, inspiring mindfulness and lovingkindness.
