Thesis (M.Sc.)--North Carolina State University, 2022.
This thesis evaluates an approach to radiation source localization using a small modular data acquisition system to record radiation, position, orientation, and atmospheric data. A Red-Pitaya STEMLab 125-14 system-on-a-chip (SoC) was used to record and analyze pulse height spectra and count rates from a 2" x 4" x 16" NaI(Tl) detector at various rotation angles with respect to a fixed but unknown source location. Three small and inexpensive integrated circuit sensors were used to provide peripheral GPS, atmospheric, and orientation data to localize the radiation source. The simple source localization technique evaluated in this research uses the point of intersection between two lines (direction of maximum recorded count rate from different detector locations) to estimate the location of a radioactive source. This method relies on the characterization of count rates recorded by an anisotropic rectangular detector across a series of rotation angles proportional to the solid angle of the larger detector face. The estimated source direction is the angle at which the largest surface area of the detector is exposed to the source and the highest count rate is recorded. With two or more detectors and the estimated source direction projected from each, the source location is estimated as the point where these two lines intersect.A validation experiment was conducted using a 20µCi Cs-137 source in a 30 m2 search area. With count rates recorded from -90° to to +90° relative rotation angles at two or more detector locations, the source location was estimated to an accuracy of 0.25 meters within an area of uncertainty of 0.32 m2 . These results show that the system and methodology is adequate for localizing an unknown radiation source in a small search area.
