This thesis is a two-fold art and design curriculum research project that analyzes the planned and operational curriculum. The first part is a Unit of Study, designed for high school students from grades nine to twelve, and is centered on the theme of memory and its relation to one's identity. The theme is generative beginning with work by contemporary artists-Doris Salcedo, Carolee Schneemann, and Jeannine Antoni-whose work emphasizes themes of memory in different aspects including personal, communal, and in relation to others. The culminating project for the Unit of Study is a cardboard sculpture. Through making a portable sculpture of an object within a place that has personal significance with corrugated cardboard, students will learn various cardboard construction techniques to create a realistic sculpture, and will understand that landmarks, places, and objects can hold memorable personal significance.
