This paper examines the effect of total physical response (TPR) on English language learner (ELL) students' understanding of English vocabulary words. Participants in this study were 23 3rd grade ELL students within two classrooms. The study was conducted using a quantitative research design. For four weeks, each class would take a pre-test to determine their knowledge of vocabulary words before going into the week of instruction. Each week it alternated which class would receive TPR and which class would receive teaching as usual (TAU). At the end of each week students took a post-test on the vocabulary words to test their understanding of the words after the week of instruction. The increase in the sum of the raw score of all students was higher when TPR was utilized. The mean score on the post-tests were also higher when TPR was utilized. It was found that students performed better on the tests when they received TPR instruction. Students understood the meaning of the word better when TPR was accompanied with the word.
