From the middle of the 1940s to the beginning of the 1970s, WLAC radio in Nashville, Tennessee, was well-known for its overnight rhythm-and-blues programming. Its three nighttime disc jockeys were White, but much of the listening audience thought they were Black. The station's 50,000 watts of power drew listeners from all over the country, but primarily from the South. This historical case study looks at the impact these White deejays at WLAC had on the understanding of race in the radio and record industry locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, as well as their role in legitimizing R&B music. Through oral histories and archival artifacts, this study looks at the deejays' commercial use of racial ventriloquy to target the often-overlooked Black audience's disposable income, and the effects of that ventriloquy mechanism on live music programming during this period.
