Resonances and symmetries are fundamental concepts in physics. This thesis presents my research on resonances and symmetries in the field of photonics. The first part of this thesis investigates Fano resonances in nonlocal metasurfaces, including their basic principles and potential practical applications such as all-optical edge detection, freespace squeezing, and the generation of light bullets. The second part of this thesis focuses on the internal symmetries of linear photonic systems, particularly Lorentz reciprocity. I propose an extended Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation applicable to all thermal emitters. I also investigate the impact of Lorentz reciprocity on reflection.I hope this thesis will contribute to a better understanding of resonances and symmetries in photonics and their practical applications.
