Effects of bullying behaviors prove devastating as illustrated by the deadly massacres at Columbine High School in 1999 and Virginia Technical University in 2007. This research study sought teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness of the Olweus Bullying Prevention program in hindering bullying behaviors. It also viewed data derived from students' responses to the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire. Teachers from the eighth grade bullying prevention classrooms at Beverly Hills Middle School in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania were interviewed as to how they viewed the program's success in lessening bullying behaviors throughout the school community. Additionally, a quantitative analysis was done using the data collected from the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire. Data came from a 2006 sample of whole school responses, the 2007 entire student population, and the 2007 eighth grade. The BVQ-STAT program was used to analyze student responses. Results indicate that teachers believe that the Olweus Bullying Prevention program does hinder bullying behaviors within the school building. Student responses support this perception, although there are still reported incidents of bullying in the hallways during passing periods. Both teachers' perceptions and student responses indicate that the positive effects of the program in reducing bullying behaviors does not extend into the neighborhood; it is ineffective past the school building. Overall, it is perceived by both the teachers and the students at Beverly Hills Middle School that programming which reinforces safety and appears to hinder bullying behaviors should be implemented in all educational institutions. Findings from this study indicate that the Olweus Bullying Prevention program hinders bullying behaviors within the school building. Although, results show that reduction of bullying behaviors does not carry over into the neighborhood as indicated by students' responses from the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire.
