There was a time when community members would talk with one another at the local grocery store, church, or ice cream parlor. However, in today's society, social media such as e-mail blasts and websites, along with blogs, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest, and YouTube have replaced communication that was once commonplace in public. This change is very apparent in education, where effective communication among schools, parents, and the community looks different than it did even a few years ago. This qualitative research focused on the methods of effective communication among the stakeholders in the 21st century. Partially framed by the work of Epstein, Moore, and Apple, this case study explored different methods of communicating among schools, parents, and community members in an effort to discover the most effective form of communication. The research took place over a two-month period and included individual interviews and questionnaires, which measured insights and beliefs about effective communication to and from the schools. The sample population consisted of secondary school administrators, teachers, and parents from school districts in the north suburban area of Boston, Massachusetts. Data analysis involved the use of SPSS software and content analysis coding methods. The findings indicated that secondary school stakeholders preferred modern technology to communicate in most situations, but that in certain situations, more traditional methods were more popular. Administrators, teachers, and parents would benefit from examining the functionality and feasibility of increasing the use of social media for parent and community outreach, but also from considering the use of traditional methods when suitable.
