This dissertation shows that alternative theatre and film histories are interconnected and should be reevaluated along the cross-media collaborations of European and American political avant-garde traditions. By focusing on the film and theatre of playwright and director Richard Foreman, the intermedial work of the Wooster Group, and the theatre, film, and video work of director Peter Sellars, I demonstrate that the complexities and politics of how we construct histories of performance and media are enmeshed with the distinct cultural, social, and political work these artists engage in through theatre and film. Returning again and again to the avant-garde antecedents that have influenced their work, these artistic collaborations serve as models of the webs of meaning that support the poetics of what Hayden White described as the "historical imagination." History and memory serve as raw material for animating archival materials through intermedial experiments using new media technologies. Drawing together complex constellations of texts and meanings, I argue that these artists reflect the shifting boundaries of time and space through their work. Film becomes an extension of the theatrical aesthetic and past and present are juxtaposed in complex networks of meaning. This project expands on the processes of history-making to include the experimental mindset that drives avant-garde creation itself, and I argue that the radical impulses that have guided these alternative artists should be restored. Histories are worked and reworked, transfigured into new patterns that reveal the deeper meanings below the surface, in the spaces between the past, the present, and the future.
