This dissertation focuses on the interrelationships between small musical factors and the formation of a large musical structure, and focuses on George Crumb's Eleven Echoes of Autumn as a kind of test case. In any musical form, many complicated relations are interwoven in a network of similarity or diversity. Every single aspect of the music exerts an influence on the others, creating a fusion, combination, juxtaposition, contrast, conflict, or imbalance between the piece's musical elements and its compositional ideas. The gradual formation of the music's structure relies on each decision made by the composer. The final structure is what's left, after all of the musical details have interwined or interfered with one another. This process of complex thinking and choice-making creates a hybrid musical structure of a piece.
