This doctoral dissertation focuses on the design, fabrication, and use of synthetic surface nanostructures with well-defined geometries and regular dimensions of the order of tens of nanometers to control interfacial phenomena relevant to micro/nanofluidic applications in energy and thermos-fluid science. In particular, the research focuses on the nanostructure effect on interrelated phenomena such as liquid wetting, surface charge, and electrokinetic phenomena that produce physicochemical hydrodynamic effects such as electroosmotic and electrokinetic flow, and streaming potential and current. The new phenomena elucidated, along with experimental and analytical results reported in this Ph.D. dissertation could have a particular impact on the development of devices for separation processes, water treatment, energy storage and conversion.
