Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are licensed practitioners who evaluate and treat individuals with communication and swallowing disorders. Their scope of practice includes providing counseling related to the communication or swallowing disorder in the patients they treat. Unfortunately, many SLPs experience apprehension when confronted with the responsibility of providing counseling within their practice. This phenomenon impacts SLPs, as they are unable to fulfill their scope of practice responsibilities, as well as communication- and swallowing-impaired individuals, whose quality of care could be negatively affected. Researchers had not explored this dilemma from the perspectives of speech-language pathology professors responsible for ensuring novice SLPs' competence. This study was a means to answer the research question, How do speech-language pathology professors perceive the concerns among SLPs regarding the provision of counseling services and its potential impact on their competence in the scope of practice and the quality of service they provide? A generic qualitative approach guided semi-structured interviews to gather speech-language pathology professors' perceptions. The population of the study was speech-language pathology professors employed within the United States, and the sample was 10 female professors. A thematic analysis of the interview data elicited three main themes: the participants' assessment of the current state of counseling training among speech-language pathology graduate programs, causes of counseling-related apprehension among SLPs, and the phenomenon's overall impacts on the field.
