Traditionally, factors of perceived burdensomeness (PB), thwarted belongingness (TB), and insecure-avoidant attachment style (IAA) have not been accounted for when assessing suicide risk. Although the literature points to the relationship between these factors and suicidal behavior, more research is needed to justify their inclusion in popular suicide risk assessment instruments. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of psychiatric liaisons in emergency rooms regarding the influence of PB, TB, and IAA on suicide risk and the utility and feasibility of evaluating these concepts as part of suicide risk assessments. The study utilized a qualitative approach to examine whether the findings from the literature held in real practice settings, with the goal of suggesting whether PB, TB, and IAA should be added to the existing suicide risk assessments, such as the Colombia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). The findings demonstrated that psychiatric liaisons perceived PB, TB, and IAA as factors increasing suicide risk in their patients. Participants were generally supportive of the addition of PB and TB to the C-SSRS but were hesitant about IAA. The study also highlighted problems faced by psychiatric liaisons in conducting suicide risk assessments, as well as their suggestions for improving the suicide risk assessment process. These included the provision of additional training to assessors, increased depth and scope of assessments, and the development of specific tools for underserved populations, such as persons with disabilities and autism spectrum disorders.
