Learning vocabulary is an essential part of learning a foreign language, because for reading comprehension the learner must know 8,000-9,000 word families (Nation, 2006). According to the self-reference effect, information encoded in relation to the self is remembered better compared to other encoding modes (Symons & Johnson, 1997). The current study examined the efficiency of L2 vocabulary learning through self-reference. Hebrew native speakers processed rare English words in two conditions. In the self-reference condition, participants generated a sentence for each word describing a fact or a memory about themselves relating to the word. In the semantic processing condition, the participants generated a sentence for each word defining the meaning of the word. Two memory tests were performed, immediately after the training session and a week later. Memory was better for items encoded through self-reference in the immediate test, but not in the delayed test. Hance, self-reference may support L2 vocabulary learning in the short term, but not suffice for improving the long-term retention.
