Over time, human migration persists, yet its effects and forms evolve under globalization. Immigration denotes the purposeful journey of individuals from their home countries to another, shaping new horizons. Immigrants experience greater transformations in their identities than other groups, as the host country consistently raises inquiries and challenges about their sense of belonging and identity (Pugh, 2018). These immigrants undergo the ongoing process of forging and reshaping their identities as they strive to establish a sense of belonging in the host nation. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to investigate the experiences of 15 high-skilled Asian Indian immigrants within the context of foregone professional identity' theory (Obodaru, 2017). The research questions guiding this study were focused on understanding the impact of alternative selves on their current selves in the workplace and the influence of these alternative selves on their professional lives. Data collection involved conducting phenomenological interviews to gather in-depth insights into their lived experiences, with particular attention to their aspirations and career narratives. Through rigorous phenomenological analysis, distinct themes emerged, including the restricted self, coping strategies, and the aspirational self. By examining participants' current, and alternative selves, the study explored the processes of identity construction, highlighting the enabling, challenging, and adaptive aspects of identity. This study contributes to the expanding body of literature on alternative selves among high-skilled Asian Indian immigrants in the U.S., shedding light on the complexities they face, such as immigration policies, visa restrictions, and associated challenges in the workplace. The findings revealed a sequential progression wherein participants transitioned from a sense of restriction and challenges to a state of peaceful adaptation in both their personal and professional lives. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the journey of high-skilled immigrants and underscores the significance of alternative selves in shaping their experiences and aspirations.
