This qualitative descriptive phenomenological study describes how Deaf Professionally Prepared (DPP) individuals described their lived experiences with the glass ceiling when pursuing career advancement in metropolitan areas of the United States. The glass ceiling metaphor, this study's theoretical underpinning, indicates that marginalized groups are held back from advancing in their careers despite their qualifications. Semi-structured interviews of 12 primary questions answered two research questions and facilitated this study's findings. Eight DPP from the metropolitan areas of the United States participated in this study, and data were gathered from their descriptions of their lived experiences with the glass ceiling effect. Moustakas' modified 7-step van Kaam method of analyzing data yielded nine themes: Impact of Hearing Attitudes and Behaviors on Advancement, Social Perceptions Tend to be Negative Unless Used by DPP to Pivot!, Deaf Have to Work Harder than their Hearing Contemporaries to Advance, Emotions and Feelings Endured by DPP, Things DPP do to Demonstrate Themselves Competent to Take Leadership Roles, Communication - The Curse and the Blessing, P- Changing the Glass Ceiling Narrative with Good Deaf Leadership, P- Relationships Shape DPP Advancement in Varying Ways, and P- Facilitators of DPP Advancement. DPP expressed ongoing struggles with the glass ceiling. The glass remains unshattered for Deaf. One participant stated, "There is work to do." Additional inquiry is warranted, as this is the first work of its nature, and gaps remain exposed from a Deaf voice perspective in the genre.
