There have historically been many reasons why deaf students did not receive the quality of education they deserved. The battle between oralism and manual education has been a key factor that still causes conflict in the educational policies for Deaf students. Currently, deaf students are still systematically underperforming, under the expected literacy level, and struggling in school. Regardless of placement, Deaf students do not perform on the same level as their hearing peers. It is important we look at all factors that contribute to academic achievement, not just test scores, to determine ways that we can better serve our deaf population of students. Significant barriers relating to social-emotional wellness, reading fluency, and language access were determined via the analysis of current literature on the topic of Deaf education. Analysis of the literature review shows severe deficits in the current Deaf education system. Several recommendations have been made in order to better educate our Deaf students holistically.
