Considering the literacy rates among the deaf population of students, it is apparent that other interventions need to be implemented. According to the research, there have been interventions with some success. Such interventions include a bilingual ASL/ English program and an AAC device to identify letters and sounds. The research also suggests that deaf children that learn sign language as their primary language do better academically. While there is no "one size fits all." solution to this problem, and students require different interventions or support, there needs to be more research done. However, AAC devices that utilize sign language could be a great tool for deaf students to improve their literacy skills.
