This is a history of Vietnam veterans from Imperial Valley; a place with a large minority population located about 120 miles east of San Diego. Imperial Valley has a unique history and its people share rich cultural perspectives. The Vietnam War impacted communities across the United States; Imperial Valley was among those greatly affected. This thesis focuses on Mexican-American soldiers from Imperial Valley and how their lives were completely changed due to the Vietnam War. The Vietnam veterans interviewed for this thesis offer insights on the struggles they faced prior to their enlistment, the horrors they experienced during their service, and the consequences they faced due to health problems caused directly by the war. During the Vietnam War, Imperial Valley residents had a lack of perspective on what was occurring in the war. The high poverty levels made life difficult for many during this time. Many people opted to serve due to the difficult life they faced, and the limited resources Imperial Valley had at the time. After the Vietnam War, Imperial Valley lacked the resources to take care of Vietnam veterans coming home and looking for mental and health services. Almost five decades later, Vietnam veterans continue to experience obstacles when dealing with their health services. Many Vietnam veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Agent Orange exposure, and other chronic illnesses. Bureaucracy within the healthcare system has made it impossible for veterans from Imperial Valley to have access to equitable resources and are often forced to travel to San Diego for medical attention. Vietnam veterans also suffer economic hardships, homelessness, and substance abuse. Veterans from Imperial Valley deserve recognition for their struggles. These issues need to be addressed to ensure that veterans receive equitable justice, care, and the support they earned for serving their country.
