The goal of this dissertation was to gain insight into how well-being and quality of life are conceptualized, how hearing loss (HL) impacts these constructs, and how the ongoing experience of social and systemic barriers to optimal functioning impact the development and mental health of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) people. This was accomplished by exploring the research on quality-of-life assessment and outcomes, aspects of subjective well-being, trends in deaf mental health, identity development among DHH people, and the efficacy of strength-based interventions applied to this population. People with identical degrees of HL can experience the HL differently (de Graaf & Bijl, 2002) due to individual factors related to personality, perceptions, age, race/ethnicity, gender, self-efficacy, social support, and general health (Punch et al., 2019). For this reason, there needs to be more research that focuses on the subjective experiences of DHH people as it relates to their development, well-being, and mental health. An outcome of this exploration of research related to well-being and quality of life among DHH people, was the creation of a resource booklet for hearing parents of DHH children. The booklet focuses on the language development of DHH children and explains how the impact of unique social factors can influence their language acquisition. It also asserts the importance of bilingualism for optimal developmental outcomes. This dissertation attempts to emphasize the importance of including the perspectives of DHH people in clinical research and practice if, as mental health clinicians, it is the hope to contribute in positive ways to the field deaf mental health and to the Deaf community.
