Limited hydrological data coupled with a reliance on the monsoon rains for agriculture makes Southeast (SE) Asia vulnerable to climate change. To develop a better understanding of how SE Asia climate behaves under a rapid anthropogenic climate change, I provide a long-term perspective from paleoclimate data from a wetland outcrop in the Central Highlands of Vietnam during Marine Isotope Stage 3, noted for abrupt climate shifts, to help minimize the uncertainties surrounding future global warming. Mean annual atmospheric temperatures inferred from brGDGTs (branched glycerol diakyl glycerol tetraethers) indicate an increase from 23 to 260C between ~53 and 33 kyr BP, which coincides with an increase in low latitude summer insolation. The warmer air temperatures over the land surface generally coincide with a dominance of C4 plants, as observed by values of δ13Cwax from 47 to 33 kyr BP. δDwax data on fatty acids show relatively stable conditions with larger oscillations between 47.4 and 52.3 ka BP. These oscillations may represent short-lived variations in overall precipitation or may be associated with a strengthening of the winter monsoon, with a greater proportion of rain from the South China Sea. Modern wind vector analysis from the HYSPLIT modeling program shows a marked shift from westerly and southwesterly flow from the Bay of Bengal in summer to northeasterly wind flow from the South China Sea as early as August. The higher annual temperature, rather than precipitation, is the main driver of vegetation change.
