In an attempt to circumvent the arid environment of the Great Plains, residents of Denver, Colorado bored into the ground in search of water. The discovery of artesian water in 1883 initiated the so-called "Artesian Well Boom." Local entrepreneurs drilled with such frenzy that the Denver Water Company felt pressured to improve the quality of their unpalatable and often contaminated drinking water. A lack of meaningful regulation, encouragement from boosters, and an amenable city council all facilitated the rapid pace of the boom. The Artesian Boom drew to a close because borers extracted more water than the Denver Basin aquifers could provide. Denver's surface water companies also furnished clean water, thereby rendering the appeal of artesian wells redundant.
