Processes that influence Cl incorporation into calcium amphiboles have been explored here, including crystal chemistry, crystal structure, pressure-temperature stability, thermochemistry, and Cl partitioning between amphibole and brine. Several series of synthetic Cl-amphiboles were produced and analyzed via X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Some amphiboles were synthesized in an anhydrous environment, while others with incrementally more concentrated FeCl2 aqueous brines ranging from 1 to 100 molal. In addition, variable Cl-bearing amphiboles were synthesized in two series, one incrementally changing Fe2+/(Mg+Fe2+) from 0.25 to 1.0, and the other incrementally changing K/(Na+K) from 0.0 to 1.0, both in 0.25 increments. Amphibole Cl contents were found to correlate positively with A-site occupancy; however, low-Cl amphiboles showed a negative correlation up to ~0.4 apfu Cl. The latter feature is caused by changes in amphibole CFe3+ related to the substitution A+ + Fe2+ ⥧ [A-vacancy] + Fe3+. This substitution is ultimately driven by redox processes associated with increasingly concentrated FeCl2 brines. Though positive correlations are typically seen between K and amphibole Cl, this study found that the A-site occupant does not constrain amphibole Cl, and Na-amphiboles can be as Cl-rich as K-amphiboles at a constant brine Cl concentration. Furthermore, an equation was derived to calculate the chlorinity of the brine fluid in equilibrium with calcic amphiboles based on its composition, assuming amphibole Cl is only a function of Fe# and brine Cl concentration. It was found that amphibole Cl incorporation expands the unit cell along only the b and c dimensions, K expands the unit cell only along a, and Fe expands it along all dimensions. Amphiboles, synthesized with Cl contents ranging from 0.0 to ~1.7 apfu, exhibit unit cell-composition trends that can be used to calculate the molar volume of various endmember chloro-amphiboles, including potassic-chloro-hastingsite (KCa2(Fe4Fe3+)(Al2Si6)O22Cl2), with a molar volume of 964.30 ± 1.10 A3. The upper thermal stability of potassic-chloro-hastingsite, bracketed by amphibole growth and breakdown in reversal reactions, when combined with the molar volume, was used to calculate the enthalpy of formation and third law entropy of ideal potassic-chloro-hastingsite as 10,676 ± 11 kJ/mole and 746 ± 11 J/K·mole, respectively.
