The goal of this study is to show that Romans 14:1-15:13 is Paul's exhortation to unity among the divided Christians in Rome and is the central thrust of his letter to the Romans from which the purpose of the letter is revealed and its overall argument is developed. This study investigates the social and historical milieu of the Roman Christians to identify the occasion for the writing of Romans. Perhaps no other section of Romans offers so clear an indication of the letter's purpose than Romans 14:1-15:13-if the designations of the weak and the strong in this passage refer to two actual groups in Rome, then it is most probable that Romans was written to unite the divided Christians. The expulsion of the Jews from Rome by Claudius in AD 49 and their subsequent return to the city shortly after his death in AD 54 led to a conflict between the Jewish and Gentile Christians and provides the occasion for Paul's writing. This study examines the central role of Romans 14:1-15:13 in the argument of the letter as a whole. If Paul's goal was to promote unity among the divided Christians in Rome, it is quite plausible that the apostle would not wait until Romans 14:1-15:13 to address their conflict. Romans is a highly coherent piece of writing and every part of the epistle contributes in some way or other to Paul's attempt to unify the divided Jewish and Gentile Christians in Rome. In the climax of the letter, Paul urges them to accept one another just as Christ has received them (Rom 15:7).
