Thesis (M.A.)--New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 2016.
Includes bibliographical references
The purpose of this thesis is to determine the presence of speaker shifts in John 3:16-21 with the use of discourse analysis as discussed by Stanley Porter in his intermediate grammar, Idioms of the Greek New Testament . The prominent question to be answered involves whether or not John offered his own exposition in 3:16-21, or if these verses are a continuing representation of Jesus' dialogue with Nicodemus. Three methods of discourse analysis are used successively in order to reach the stated goal. The first method utilizes discourse boundary features to set the parameters of the units within 3:1- 21. These boundaries will contribute an outline for the remainder of the study. The second method constitutes an analysis of prominent features within each section in order to evaluate the speaker(s) emphases. Finally, an examination of the various cohesive ties within the pericope helps to show how each unit works in tandem with the other units to communicate a coherent message. By analyzing each of these factors, this study identifies those shifts that most indicate a possible change in speaker.
