The starting point of this dissertation is the interconnectedness of contemporary social and ecological crises. With this hermeneutical lens, antiquity is interpreted in light of the empires that shaped the biblical text and its contexts. Throughout images are used as a window specifically into the dominant ideology of imperial Rome in the first century CE. The purpose of this dissertation is to substantiate Brigitte Kahl's claim that Paul's radical regard for the human Other, articulated through justification by faith, can be applied to Earth as Other through a focus on Galatians 6:14-15. Earth is established as an Other from the foundation of Greek civilization through a close literary analysis of Hesiod's Theogony. The organizing principles of the Greco-Roman cosmos of Paul's day are then explored through the historical development of two key terms, kosmos and ta stoicheia tou kosmou in the Greek philosophical tradition. Turning to the Septuagint, the imperial cosmos and its idolatry are then placed in contrast to the God of Israel's creation. Grounded in these historical and literary contexts, the relevance of Paul's call to just relationship with the human Other, i.e., other conquered nations, is then interpreted in light of a similar call to just relationship with Earth. For the Paul the movement from cosmos to new creation in light of the crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ opens the possibility for renewed and just relationships among Earth, humanity and God despite their brokenness since the beginning in the Garden.
