This study investigated the degree to which specific irrational beliefs (Demand for Approval, Blame-Proneness, and Anxious Overconcern), gender-role socialization (category and characteristics), and gender could be used to predict anger-proneness. A total of 239 undergraduate students (83 males and 156 females) completed the Bem Sex-Role Inventory, the Trait Anger Scale, and a portion of the Irrational Beliefs Test. Two separate multiple regression analyses (MRAs) were performed with two different measures of gender-role socialization: (1) gender-role category, and (2) Masculinity and Femininity scores from the Bem. The initial MRA showed that Blame-Proneness and Anxious Overconcern were significantly related to anger-proneness, while gender, gender-role category, and Demand for Approval showed no significant relationship to anger-proneness. Results indicated that 26% of the variance in anger-proneness was accounted for by the linear composition of these predictor variables. The second MRA, however, showed that all three irrational beliefs and Bem Masculinity and Femininity scores were significantly related to anger-proneness. More specifically, Masculinity showed a significant positive relationship and Femininity showed a significant negative relationship to anger-proneness. once again, there were no significant gender differences. Results indicated that 29% of the variance in anger-proneness was accounted for by the linear composition of these predictor variables. Additional findings, clinical implications, and directions for future research are presented.
