This study examined the process of gender-tracking as evidenced by the disparity of university and junior college attendance in Japanese higher education. The examination focused on how Japanese education, despite its egalitarian pretense, embodies its own unique system of tracking and gender separation and regulates access and opportunity for women at the higher education level. This study investigated how many women have been and currently are enrolled in higher education and in what types of higher education. Discussion focused on the disparity of women and men enrolled in junior colleges, four-year university undergraduate programs, and research universities. The findings indicated that women overwhelmingly are clustered in low-status, low-quality institutions for higher education. Although various factors have an impact on the current situation whereby many women attend junior colleges rather than universities and are under represented in specific disciplines, this study examined three variables--the overall structure of higher education, societal attitudes and norms regarding women's education, and restrictions in employment opportunities for female university graduates.
