Health care organizations in the United States experienced a 97% increase in the number of data records breached from 2010 to 2011. This increase underscored the need for health care employees to incorporate training and awareness of information security concerns into compliance programs to prevent the risk of a data breach or fraud. The purpose of this case study was to explore how health care compliance employees can reduce the risks associated with internal fraud and data breaches. The framing of the study included the use of normative neo-institutional theory, which provided the basis for exploring the theme dataset identified in the literature review. The interview questions addressed the incorporation of the 7 elements and information security protocols in compliance programs to assist compliance professionals in Tennessee. Data came from the themes identified in the literature review and 21 semistructured interviews of compliance professionals in the health care industry. Emergent coding of the interview data revealed 3 themes: compliance programs were in effect for varying lengths of time, there were processes in place to incorporate the 7 elements, and only 4 participants referenced the 7 elements as a source for compliance program development. The findings of the study may contribute to social change by identifying best practices incorporated in compliance programs that prevent data breaches. Compliance professionals can benefit from incorporating the best practices to prevent a data breach, which may enhance consumer trust, confidence, and financial sustainability.
