Job satisfaction is a major concern in all occupational fields, and it is one of the most researched concepts in work and organizational psychology. Few studies have looked at the use of positive reinforcement in improving employee satisfaction. Five supervisors were trained to use positive verbal reinforcement to investigate its effect on employee job satisfaction ratings. Employees of the supervisors who were trained completed a series of job satisfaction questionnaires during a baseline phase, intervention phase and post test phase. A multiple-baseline single subject experimental design across subjects and a time series analysis was employed to look for trends or patterns in the data. The researcher found no clear trends or patterns; however, when the means of all supervisors were combined a slight increase in job satisfaction ratings from baseline phase to intervention phase to post test phase was found. The validity data submitted by the supervisors was incomplete, and therefore, the slight increase cannot be attributed solely to the training. It can be implied from this study that training supervisors in the use of positive verbal reinforcement has no negative effect on employee job satisfaction.
