This was a descriptive non-experimental quantitative comparison study that focused on examining the selected effects that music has on young adults who listen to music to manage depressive symptoms. The researcher aimed to explore a receptive music therapy intervention, examining the effects that musical tempo preference has on depressive symptoms such as hopelessness and overall levels of depression. Furthermore, the researcher compared the overall levels of depression and hopelessness levels among two musical tempo preference groups. This study included 136 young adults from the ages of 18-24 years of age with mild or moderate depressive symptoms. The upbeat musical tempo preference group included a preference to listen to music with an Allegro Moderato tempo (116 bpm) or higher and the non-upbeat tempo preference group included a preference to listen to music with an Andante tempo (88 bpm) or lower. Among this study, the researcher also aimed to identify musical elements such as positive lyrics defined by participants and specific songs that can be commonly identified among the musical tempo preference groups. Participants completed questionnaires and measures such as the Beck Depression Inventory-2, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and a personal coping and music listening questionnaire. The findings suggested that musical tempo have implications of tempo being associated with having higher or lower hopelessness levels among young adults with suggested mild or moderate depressive symptoms. Findings also showed commonalities among the preference groups, identifying titles of songs and musical elements with positive correlation with having lower hopelessness levels associated with depression.
