The focus of this research study was the perceived support needs of families of children with autism. The problem addressed by the study was that family members caring for a family member with autism are not receiving adequate support services to care effectively for their family member with autism. The guiding conceptual framework of this study was based on Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory. Eleven individuals from New York participated in either semi-structured interviews or a focus group. Braun and Clarke's six steps were used to analyze the data. Seven themes emerged through inductive analysis. The first theme was that prediagnosis and postdiagnosis and Autism education/training are needed for effective care of a child with autism. Additionally, the second theme revealed that a roadmap and informational guide of supports and services available are critically needed for the effective care of a child with autism. The third theme was that community-level support such as daycare, church, and the school provided support and services that helped children with autism to overcome some of their deficiencies. The fourth theme focused on support and services provided through governmental and non-governmental agencies as improving the quality of life of families of children with autism, while the fifth theme showed that available support and services such as alternate job schedules for parents, empathetic siblings, and caring relatives help parents to keep a career and contribute to effective care of the child with Autism. The last two themes showed that some strategies adopted by parents at the family level help reduce the amount of stress felt by parents of children with autism and autism-friendly centers or activities or programs are needed for effective care of a child with Autism. Results indicated that parents of children with autism would benefit from policies and support services that reflect their perception of support need to care effectively for not only their child with autism but also themselves and the entire family.
