The intersections among novel technological affordances and limitations, unfixed social circumstances, and an industry in constant flux have impacted the barriers for entry into the adult entertainment industry, affecting the alternative pornographies of marginalized identities and upsetting the ways in which these silenced groups are able to further their community building goals. In this dissertation, I combine the methods of situational analysis and critical cartographic mapping to investigate how the disenfranchising efforts by the OnlyFans platform affect marginalized content creators' capacity to create, maintain, and mobilize their audiences, as well as the long-term effects of these processes of deplatforming on creators' community building efforts. As I found, kicking people off a platform where they did their digital work affects their abilities to do that digital work, affects their abilities to continue communicating, and affects their abilities to disestablish and then re-establish audience relationships. In other words, kicking people off a platform affects the communication necessary to build lasting social movements and communities. To maintain an approachable and recognizable identity, prospective pornographic performers are encouraged to embrace the strategic calibration of perceived amateurism and spontaneity across various contexts and platforms. However, adult entertainment is not like regular gig-work because their professional identities are not limited to singular platforms, because building community lies at its core, and because all dispersed professional performances cumulatively constitute content creators' personas. Continuously weaving a textual web of fragmented content with the ultimate goal of appeasing and attracting regular and participatory patrons, adult entertainers promise "authentic," immediate access and wish-fulfillment at the price of sustained financial support.Nevertheless, for those individuals and groups with ideas outside of the traditional, professionalized boundaries of social media corporations, existence on their platforms is a matter of survival. Existing under constant threat of content moderation and banning, performers and their communities are heavily "brigaded" by their sociopolitical, religious, and corporate opposition. As leaders of contemporary social movements, content creators encourage their audiences to engage in a process of condensation around a common identity to preempt and withstand the potential destabilizing fallout of any one network of power's deplatforming.
