Jane Austen and her literary works have been the focus of endless books, articles and reviews, and continue to maintain an astounding level of relevance both in academic circles and in popular culture. The female world, as Austen describes it, transcends generations and time while inviting readers to look beyond societal conventions and gender-based double standards. In my dissertation I hope to uncover the inner dynamics of a distinct female sphere inhabited by Austen's heroines and the women who surround them. I wish to examine the ways in which a heroine grows, learns, and defines herself in relation to the other women in her life. I also wish to explore how mothers and sisters facilitate the process of maturation and development in a young woman living in Austen's time. In the introductory chapter of my research I go back to the origins of the Bildungsroman, the novel of education and coming-of-age, and discuss the ways in which the genre operates in stories of female development. I explore the ways in which a woman's position in society, patriarchal expectations, and literary conventions influenced the development of the female Bildungsroman, particularly among women authors.Chapter one provides a thorough examination of gender-based restrictions and expectations as they existed in eighteenth-century England. My discussion focuses on the rise of the subsequent ubiquitous genre of conduct books, the separation of spheres (and the creation of a female one), and the ideal of The Proper Lady, dictated to women by conduct-book writers.Chapter two explores the emergence of a feminist discourse within the constraints of patriarchal ideology. I examine the ideas and agendas of several prominent female writers of the era, and later focus my discussion on Mary Wollstonecraft and her A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Wollstonecraft and her seminal work serve as an introduction to some of the subtly feminist undertones found in Austen's novels. Chapter three deals with eighteenth-century views on motherhood and female sexuality, and the eventual clash between the two. I discuss the rise of ideological concepts such as The Cult of Domesticity and examine the ways in which patriarchal institutions confined women into a sexless, idealized domestic role. Chapter four provides a close reading of Emma and Persuasion, the Austen novels that feature heroines whose mothers had died. I discuss the heroines' growth in relation to that absence, taking into account their relationships with substitute maternal or sororal figures.Chapter five takes a closer look at Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park, the novels depicting a heroine plucked from her family home and placed in the care of others. I examine the ways in which the distance from one's mother and the creation of new female bonds facilitate the heroines' process of maturation. Chapter six explores the two sets of sisters who appear in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. My discussion focuses on the presence of a biological mother in the protagonists' lives, the potential damage such a presence can cause, and the eventual (and inevitable) separation of daughter from the mother. I focus on the bond between the two sets of sisters in each novel, and on the ways in which they maintain its strength by learning from each other.
